EGYPT: Court awards Christian boys to Muslim father

An appeal court in Alexandria has awarded custody of two 13 year-old Christian twin boys to their Muslim father who deserted the family nine years ago. Medhat Ramses Labib left the family, converted to Islam and married another woman. Since then, the boy’s mother, Kamilia Gaballah, has been involved in 40 different court cases with her ex-husband over issues of alimony and custody.

EGYPT: Police raid Christian bookshop in Cairo

On Saturday 15th March, police raided a Christian bookshop in Cairo. The raid was led by General Tarik Barakat who instructed a team of eight plain clothes police officers to search the shop. After a thorough search of the Nile Christian Book Shop lasting two hours, they confiscated books, CDs and copies of a newspaper read by Christians.

Former Muslim Mohammed Ahmed Hegazy has taken a court case against the Egyptian government to change the religion listed on his identification papers to Christianity. The case has received extensive coverage in the Egyptian media since it was first raised in August after the Egyptian Interior Ministry rejected Mr. Hegazy’s request for a new ID card.
