ERITREA: “Release the Seven”

Release the 7 PosterVoices for Justice is a new collaborative effort by multiple Religious Liberty Partnership member organisations to unite under one banner – Voices for Justice –  on one day each year to focus on one country or case. The day chosen is 22 August, the United Nations International Day Commemorating the Victims of Acts of Violence Based on Religion or Belief. The object of the collaborative effort is to create maximum impact through concerted advocacy, awareness and prayer.

The inaugural campaign in 2025 is focused on a call to release seven Christian leaders in Eritrea who have been imprisoned for more than twenty years – Haile Naizge, Kiflu Gebremeskel, Meron Gebreselasie, Futsum Gebrenegus, Tekleab Menghisteab, Gebremedhin Gebregiorgis and Kidane Weldou.

A march is being held to the Eritrean Embassy in Washington DC on Thursday 21st (as the Embassy is closed on Friday 22nd) and a similar event will take place in London on the same day. Events and actions will be held in at least fifteen countries including Finland, Nigeria, Poland, Sri Lanka and Switzerland. Among the participating organisations are Christian Solidarity Worldwide, Jubilee Campaign and Open Doors International.

Church in Chains, which has participated in the Annual Prayer and Protest Vigil at the Eritrean Embassy in London each May for the past twenty years, encourages supporters to join in prayer for the seven pastors on Thursday 21st.
